Mount Malabar rises over the Java Preanger, the old highland heart of West Java where coffee first took root on the island. The trees stand at 1,800 metres across steep, forested ridges. Volcanic soil and cool mountain air slow the ripening of the cherry and draw sugar into the seed.
The lot is the work of Poktan Rahayu Tani, a farmer collective that tends the trees and gathers the harvest across these slopes. Theirs is the patient labour of smallholders: selective picking at full ripeness, cherry pooled from plots scattered across the mountainside.
This coffee turns from the convention of its region. There is no wet hulling here, none of the earthy weight that method gives so much Indonesian coffee. The cherry is dried whole and slow, and the fruit surrenders its sweetness to the seed.
Two varieties stand side by side in the planting. Typica is the ancestral line, carried into Indonesia in the colonial era, held for clarity and burdened by low yield. Catimor is its modern counterweight, bred for resistance on demanding ground. Held together at this altitude, the two faces of Indonesian coffee meet in a single offering, divine and desolate in the same breath.
