Kenya produces some of the most structurally intense coffees in the world. Not by accident, but by design of land and discipline. Around Mount Kenya, deep red volcanic soils rich in iron and organic matter anchor root systems with force. Altitude preserves acidity. Cool nights slow maturation. The result is fruit of precision and density.

Kirinyaga District rests on the southern foothills of Mount Kenya, bordering Nyeri to the west. Its name is derived from the mountain itself, referencing the brilliance of its snow-capped peaks. Here, coffee is not peripheral. It is central to livelihood and identity.

Kiangai Factory operates under the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative Society, one of eight factories within the cooperative structure. Approximately 900 smallholder members contribute to the mill, collectively tending close to 180,000 trees. Each producer manages small plots, often intercropped and carefully maintained, delivering hand-picked cherry at peak ripeness during harvest.

Kiangai translates to holy ground or belonging to God. Historically, the surrounding area was used for local religious practice. That reverence persists, now expressed through agronomy and process.

Cherries are delivered the same day they are picked. They are sorted, pulped, and fermented using fresh water from the Ragati River. Fermentation is carried overnight, allowing mucilage to break down in controlled stages before washing channels remove remaining sugars. Clean parchment is then transferred to raised drying beds, where it is turned consistently under full sun. Drying is slow and monitored closely until moisture stabilises between 10 - 12%.

Only then is the parchment rested, bagged, and prepared for export.

The cup profile reflects the system behind it. Dense fruit character. Layered acidity. Structured sweetness. A weight that carries through.

Altitude. Soil. Water. Process. Nothing accidental. Everything deliberate.
