STARLESS AEON, Timor-Leste

Vanilla, Black Tea, Brown Sugar

Grower:               Various small holders
Processor:          Local Gleno Mill
Region:               Aileu Vila
Varietal:              Timor
Processing:        Natural
Altitude:              1,550 - 1,600 MASL

In the rugged expanse of Aileu in Timor-Leste, where the land is steep and the altitudes stand between 1,550 - 1,600 MASL, a compelling coffee tale unfolds. A collective of 542 smallholders toil on pint-sized plots, their farms embraced by casuarina shade trees. These resilient lands, each a modest 0.5 hectares, witness the gripping dance of handpicking ripe cherries, which are then sent to an isolated mill in Gleno. Here, the cherries languish in the cool embrace of sundry, a haunting process that spans 18 to 22 days.

The history of Timor-Leste is a compelling saga, marked by colonization, occupation, and a challenging quest for peace. In this resilient nation, coffee emerges as a stalwart economic player, defying the harsh climate. The arid weather, meager rainfall, and impoverished soil conspire against the coffee cherry, limiting yields to a modest 500 grams per tree. Yet, amidst adversity, Timor-Leste's coffee industry perseveres, weathering the storm through incremental improvements.

As the climate remains challenging, NGOs step into the scene, funding programs that seek to revolutionize coffee cultivation. The government, too, casts a hopeful light in the shadows, investing in infrastructure like rugged roads that may ease the transport of the coffee harvest. Timor-Leste, entrenched in hardship, aspires to be a steadfast producer of coffee, a beacon of quality in the sun-drenched shadows.

In this rugged landscape, we, too, tread with determination. Our mission, amidst the challenges, is to stand side by side with the resilient farmers, cooperatives, and extension officers. Together, we strive to uplift yields and quality, envisioning a future where each tree yields 2.5 kilograms of prosperity. A future where, against the odds, prosperity blooms amid the challenges, and the echo of quality resonates in the sun-soaked land.
