In the Masina kebele of the Adola woreda sits a washing station that lies at the heart of Project Origin. Built in 2017 with export partner Primrose, Masina was the site of the first Ethiopian carbonic maceration coffees, and a great deal was learned refining that process here. A river runs beside the station that the community wades through to reach town and school, and Project Origin and Primrose have since funded a bridge over it to spare the one to two hour walk to the nearest crossing.
Ethiopian trees are left to grow wild and mutate to the landscape, so a single lot draws on hundreds of native varieties meshed into one cohesive cup. Project Origin lists these as Heirloom, cherry gathered from smallholder gardens across the Guji zone and pooled at the station for processing.
This lot is carbonic maceration washed, cherry sealed and fermented under controlled conditions before washing and drying on raised beds. The coffees of this woreda are already world known, and one carried a barista to victory at the 2018 World Barista Championship.
